Chicken pox

Chicken pox

What started out as an attempt to draw shingles… changed into this. Shingles are (is?) disgusting and I couldn’t bear to look at pictures of them on the internet any longer. However, shingles, um, are/is a fascinating ailment…. mostly because they only occur on ONE side of your back! Or, if you’ve been REALLY bad, your FACE! Do NOT google for ‘face shingles’.

More info:

Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After an attack of chickenpox, some virus particles remain inactive in the nerve roots next to your spinal cord. As you get older, or if you have an illness or stress that weakens your immune system, the reactivated virus may travel along the nerve to the skin to cause shingles. It’s usually only one nerve that is affected and the outbreak of the shingles (plus the pain) appears on the area of the skin that the infected nerve supplies.

Gross, but fascinating!
