THE TROPICANA

THE TROPICANA

… simply the best. The front desk person was a U2 fan and he upgraded my room for free! It was palatial and included a huge pink spa pool right by the bed! The spa pool was dingy and had probably been used by many prostitutes. Some hair came out when I turned on the jets. But I used it anyway! The bed had a huge mirrored headboard that extended all the way up the wall and onto the ceiling!! So you could SEE YOURSELF LYING IN BED. It was a thrill. The whole hotel was a thrill. It was so run down but so, so wonderful. Look at the logo!! It looks like AC/DC!!! I took this picture from across the street… in front of MGM Grand I think. I remember that I wedged the Holga in between the bars of a black metal fence for stability, and it worked really well. Hence not too much blur on this one. I think this was about a 4 second exposure. While I was counting out the seconds a boy came up behind me and said, “Excuse me, how much does a polar bear weigh?” and I said, “I’m sorry, I just have to finish taking my picture,” and then I carefully released the shutter and I said, “I don’t know, how much,” and he said, “ENOUGH TO BREAK THE ICE,” which of course was a DELIGHT. Turns out he was from San Jose. No wonder he was such a weirdo! (apologies to my non-weird San Jose graphic design peeps. You know you’re the minority.)
